CD44 is a ubiquitously expressed type 1 transmembrane glycoprotein and proteoglycan, otherwise known as phagocytic glycoprotein 1 (pgp 1), which acts as a receptor for the major extracellular matrix component hyaluronate, and also binds other ligands including collagen and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). . .
