Arbor Assays LLC was formed in July 2007 in Ann Arbor, Michigan by three scientists with over 50 years combined experience in designing, manufacturing, analyzing and shipping FDA regulated life science and clinical products worldwide. Two of the founders have worked at Abbott Labs Diagnostics Division, Kallestad Diagnostics, Sanofi Diagnostics, R&D Systems, and in 1992 founded Assay Designs, Inc. Assay Designs grew from 2 part-time employees to become a major worldwide supplier of immunoassay and detection kits, and in 2007, was acquired by another company. We wanted to rekindle the spirit from 1992 in founding Arbor Assays.
Our Philosophy
Arbor Assays’ company philosophy is to build the highest quality detection and immunoassay products for clinically important biomolecules. Our primary customer focus is pharmaceutical and clinical scientists. We build robust immunoassay and enzyme activity kits to quantitate biomolecules in biological matrices. We delight in taking on development of the most technically challenging assays! The thrill of building a kit that makes someone’s job easier, or allows the measurement of something previously not measurable, is what drives us. And we are driven!
Quality is paramount to our success. We will not follow the trend of other companies in contracting out services such as organic chemistry, peptide synthesis or polyclonal and monoclonal antibody production to whatever country can provide the cheapest labor. The quality of the product will suffer. So we go back to the same high quality suppliers (and friends), mostly ones we’ve known from our FDA-regulated diagnostics employment, even if it will cost more. The quality of the analytical measurement is proportional to the quality of the raw materials.
At Arbor Assays, we are totally committed to customer service and we will make every effort to satisfy your scientific needs. Part of this philosophy is shared by another Ann Arbor-based establishment, the Zingerman’s Community of Businesses, which includes (among other things) the best deli in the US today. Zingerman’s embraces the following conviction, as stated on a Zingerman’s website: “We have always believed that our customers can tell the difference between mediocre and marvelous. The fact that while competition increases every day, great numbers of food-loving folks continue to find their way down to Detroit Street to eat just reinforces that belief.” We hold the same firm belief in the judgment of our customers. To paraphrase, despite the fact that competition increases every day, great numbers of science-loving folks continue to find their way to Arbor Assays to purchase our exceptional products, reinforcing that belief.
On the right-hand side of our home page you will see a “Notable Quote.” This displays a random selection of our favorite science quotes. If you would like to send other fun, science-based quotes to be added, please e-mail them to us at info@ArborAssays.com.
Here is a quote that guides us from Mahatma Gandhi:
“A customer is the most important visitor on our premises. He is not dependent on us. We are dependent on him. He is not an interruption in our work. He is the purpose of it. He is not an outsider in our business. He is part of it. We are not doing him a favor by serving him. He is doing us a favor by giving us an opportunity to do so.”— Mahatma Gandhi
It is a philosophy we believe in passionately.

PRODUCTS
At Arbor Assays, we want your input into how our products perform in your hands and what we might do to improve them. A lot of companies treat your input as a burden (some even make it almost impossible for you to leave your comments, or interact with them). We welcome your helpful comments and suggestions on how our in-house designed products perform in your applications.
SERVICES
What Interactive Assay Solutions™ means to you, the customer, is that we are committed to providing you with assay products and services that meet your needs. That means we work with you to develop high quality kits and custom assays that meet your requirements.
This is where your interaction with us is imperative. We need your honest and thorough input into everything from the assay specifications (on which we will work closely with you to define and develop) to the final reports and/or manufactured product. Because these projects can take many months to complete and involve a considerable investment of time and money from both parties, we need to know your clear expectations up front. This will allow us to consult with you and design the chemistry, immunochemistry, detection technology, solid phase (if needed), etc. that satisfies the market requirements and your specific needs. Because of our experience in the in vitro diagnostic and life science industry, we can help you to choose the most appropriate course of development for your project.
COLLABORATIONS
We view our collaborations with university and pharmaceutical company researchers as a positive shared opportunity. Arbor Assays’ licensing team has many years of experience licensing products, and we can quickly negotiate an agreement through your institution's technology transfer office. Partnering with us offers several benefits. A license agreement can generate additional research funds. The costs associated with the development, production, packaging, and shipment of products become our responsibility.
For detection systems and kits in earlier stages of development, we suggest a product partnering arrangement. If you have isolated a unique product in an area of mutual interest, Arbor Assays can work with you to develop a specific marketable product. Our objective is to work with each individual researcher and their institution to establish a mutually beneficial arrangement. If you have a reagent or an idea for a product, please contact us for additional information.
